How to get involved
The Borien Educational Foundation for Southern Africa (BEFSA) is a small charity which relies solely on the support and kindness of your donations and volunteer time to achieve our goals for young people in the Eastern Cape. There are a number of ways you can get involved to support BEFSA and help change lives.
> Sponsor a child
An increasing number of children growing up in rural areas live in child-led households, where the parents have died or abandoned the child whilst they look for work elsewhere. The eldest child in the household will often cook, clean and care for the younger siblings – all of whom are unable to afford to go to school.
£20 a month will pay for a child’s school fees, books, uniform and a tracksuit.
To sponsor a child, please contact us.
> Support women in business
There is a 72% unemployment rate in the area in which we work. Our Masambe micro-credit programme empowers unemployed women to develop their own business under the guidance of our project worker.
£10 a month for one year will provide a business loan to support a woman to start her own micro-business.
To sponsor a woman in business, please contact us.
If you would like to get involved closer to home, why not host an event like an auction, garden party or jumble sale? For the more active among you, you could ask friends and family to sponsor a run, bike-ride, or sky dive. You can set up a personalised BEFSA donation page through Virgin Money Giving.
> Volunteer for BEFSA
If you would like to be part of the BEFSA team, we would love you to share your skills with our communities of schools. There are a wide range of opportunities for you to do if you’d like to volunteer for BEFSA. Depending on your area of interest and expertise, you will have the opportunity to get involved in many of our programmes from teaching in schools, running after school clubs, passing on your IT skills to creating vegetable gardens and undertaking minor repairs and maintenance of school buildings.
We ask all volunteers to travel in pairs, and note that we are unable to cover travel costs and expenses. If you would like to join us, please complete our Befsa volunteer application form.
> Charity of Choice
You can ask your school, college, university or company to nominate BEFSA as its charity of choice for the year. It’s easy to do and we can provide you with logos and merchandise to help promote our partnership, together improving the performance of young people in schools.
You could join national events on behalf of BEFSA. Popular events include the London Marathon and the Great North Run. Once again, you can use our Virgin Money Giving page to encourage support.
> Link your Woolworths card
Join the Woolworths project ‘My School, My Village, My Project‘ by linking your South African Woolworths card to BEFSA. Every time you use your Woolies card, a percentage of your spend is donated to up to three charities of your choice at no extra charge to you.
